The structure provides an invaluable resource for planning counseling care. A must!
The Minister As Diagnostician : Personal Problems in Pastoral Perspective by Paul W. Pruyser This is a classic and provides a context for developing a spiritual assessment model for possible care. Every minister should have this as a standard part of their library.
Counseling People With Cancer (Counseling and Pastoral Theology) by Jann Aldredge-Clanton There are many practical insights that help in providing pastoral care and counseling for those who are suffering with cancer. A very important concern for our time.

Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors by D. Corydon Hammond, Ph.D. This is a somewhat exhaustive volume of what those who are practicing hypnosis are saying to their patients. From anxiety to preparation to surgery to smoking and other addictions, Hammond, the editor, provides a great resource for the clinician.
The Chemical Dependence Treatment Planner by Robert B. Perkinson and Arthur E. Jongsma, Jr. This is an excellent resource to aid counselors in the development treatment plans for the chemically dependent. The authors provide over 1,000 goals and objectives listed appropriately according to the specific diagnosis. This helps the addictions counselor be very intentional in client treatment.
A Primer on Rational-Emotive Therapy by Windy Dryden and Raymond DiGiuseppe The authors provide a fine introduction into the practice of Rational Emotive Therapy (RET). Even though the book has been in print for several years, it provides a fine foundation for the clinician who is trying to develop RET’s effective cognitive style.
Family Therapy of Drug Abuse and Addiction by M. Duncan Stanton, Thomas C. Todd, and Associates
This is a classic work that is very thorough in its presentation family therapy concerning chemical abuse and dependence. The book provides assistance in identifying addiction problems and how it disrupts the family system, as well as provides effective interventions.
Spiritual Resources in Family Therapy Froma Walsh
Froma Walsh, an extremely gifted family therapist, edits this fine work. Heretofore, spirituality was “off-limits” to clinicians. Pastoral Counselors know full well how necessary spirituality is in providing care and psychological healing to their clients. Dr. Walsh provides insight for spirituality’s integration into professional clinical care.
